Nowadays, English is used as an international language for communication in the world. Wherever we visit the other countries, we will find that the people use English for trading, communication or business.

In teaching English, there are some skills that must be considered such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Those skills play important role for mastering English, especially writing.
Writing is really related to the grammar mastery. For arranging the words and coherence of the paragraph, grammar mastery gives positive influence for writing ability.
Problem Identification
Learning to write must take a long time. It is harder than learn to speak. Because, learning to write need much vocabulary and grammar mastery. Sometimes, it is hard to begin writing when the students get no inspiration about the theme what they should write. Even bad mood can be he obstacle in writing.
Students actually should get motivation from the teacher so that they can afford much to write something they know. They also must read a lot in order to have material for writing. In addition, the writing strategies they have studied in the college should be applied in writing.
Problem Limitation
For this a great number of problems dealing with writing ability, the writer will only focus on the low English grammar mastery. Therefore, the writer limits the problem only to ‘Correlation between English grammar mastery and writing ability among the fourth semester students of state Islamic college (STAIN) Jurai Siwo Metro in the academic year of 2009/2010’.

The problem that will be studied in this research is formulated as follow:
What is the level of English grammar mastery among the fourth semester students of state Islamic college (STAIN) Jurai Siwo Metro in the academic year of 2009/2010?
What is the level of writing ability among the fourth semester students of state Islamic college (STAIN) Jurai Siwo Metro in the academic year of 2009/2010?
Does grammar mastery have correlation with writing ability among the fourth semester students of state Islamic college (STAIN) Jurai Siwo Metro in the academic year of 2009/2010?

Knowing the level of English grammar mastery among the fourth semester students of state Islamic college (STAIN) Jurai Siwo Metro in the academic year of 2009/2010.
Knowing the level of writing ability among the fourth semester students of state Islamic college (STAIN) Jurai Siwo Metro in the academic year of 2009/2010.
Knowing whether there is correlation between English grammar mastery and writing ability among the fourth semester students of state Islamic college (STAIN) Jurai Siwo Metro in the academic year of 2009/2010.
