CLEANLINESS

Sayid: You! Don’t throw away the trash there. You should put it away in the recycle bin or in the special place for rubbish. Don’t you be ashamed of yourself, do you?

Eni: Sorry. But don’t say so. Just remind me not to throw away the trash here, and then I will throw it away in the recycle bin. Your words stab my heart, don’t you know it. I am angry with you.

Yeni: Hey, don’t be so serious and let the trash break your friendship that you have tied in years. It is not funny friends. Let’s discuss this problem together with our friends now.

Dian: He said the truth friends. I know that the trash is not a big deal for us, but it plays a unique role in our daily life. For example, illness that attacks you is caused from the dirty environment.

Eva: Exactly. If you throw away rubbish, garbage, or trash at anywhere, it will bring illness to your body and make your body defense becomes weak. So, some diseases will easily come into your body.

Maysaroh: It is frightened. We should keep our environment clean from any kinds of waste in order to avoid bacteria infect our body. Fortunately, my home is always clean, because my maid always cleans it every day.

Sayid: You are so lucky glad. You have a maid to help you cleaning the house, but as the host, you should show him how to keep the house clean, because you are the model.

Eni: Of course. We should begin from ourselves. It is unused if your house is clean but you yourself contaminate it by throwing away rubbish inside the house. It means that you are the dirty man.

Yeni: I don’t wanna get the nickname “The Dirty Man”. I must be ashamed with that strange name, because it contains negative sense. I will be very glad if someone calls me as “The Clean Man”.

Dian: Yueee. But wait a minute. “The Clean Man” is not suitable for you. You should check your cloth, nails, pant, and under . . . you know. Is it clean or dirty? If you understand what I said, you must think twice to get it.

Eva: You miss some. Teeth, brain, and hearth should be clean. Cleanliness is not only determined from the outside performance, but also inside one. Trust me!

Maysaroh: It also as our prophet Muhammad said: . It means that if we keep everything clean, Allah will give us reward and our faith will increase. It is a proud, isn’t it?

Sayid: I am with you glads. But, would you tell me how to keep our environment clean every day, please? I am staying in the board so that it is hard to keep it clean every day.

Eni: Ok! I will tell you one. You should sweep your room twice in a day. You can do it in the morning and in the afternoon, because those are the good timing to clean your room.

Yeni: Don’t forget to stick a paper that is written “Keep The Area Clean”. At least, it will motivate and remind not only you but also people surround you. It is a good trick.

Dian: Nice. But my suggestion is better then you. You should make a washing and cleaning schedule to organize you when you should wash and clean the room so that your room will free from dust and dirty.

Eva: Almost nice. You also have to prepare a basket in you room to put away the dry trash such as paper and plastic. You must empty the basket once in three days or until it is full of trash.

Maysaroh: Emmm, you have to mop the floor every two days in order to make your floor free from dust and avoid from the germ. If you don’t clean it, typhus will attack you. Becareful!

Sayid: I don’t know whether I can do all your suggestions. But I have to try it first to prove that I am able to manage my room clean. Because I will be the housewife after getting married few years ago.

Eni: Amin. By the way, typhus is a very common illness that attacks people who never wash or clean his plate after eating or food that is contaminated by germ that is brought by certain animal like cat, cockroach, and fly.

Yeni: I have heard about that. It is the common illness that usually attacks the poor. I don’t mean to say that the poor is dirty, but the fact shows that. You can ask to the hospital.

Dian: I see that. Although this disease usually attacki the poor, but may be it is possible to attack the rich if they don’t keep the house clean from cat, cockroach, and fly. It can happen.

Eva: You are right. Everything is possible. It depends on how a person tries to make the surrounding environment free from diseases. If they are success to make it real, they will get the best result.

Maysaroh: Cool! But how to indicate that a person is contaminated by this disease? We have to know it, so that we can do the best thing if someone are indicated adopting this disease.

Sayid: As I know, in the first day, he will get fever. His body shakes and he will sweat hardly. He cannot sleep because he feels hot and cold in turns. It is terrible.

Eni: Yup. He also will feel his tongue is bitter. When he want to swallow something, in real it is sweet, he just taste it bitter, even his saliva. Everything is tasted bitter for the infected person.

Yeni: He must be in suffering. He cannot taste even the sweet food. I don’t want to be infected with this disease, because you cannot eat delicious food and to do your daily activities. Indeed, I don’t want.

Dian: We hope we will never be infected. But you know friends, the dangerous thing is, it is possible he can die if there is no first aid to the infected people. So, if you know that someone is infected, bring him directly to the hospital.

Eva: Or you can also report it to the chief of neighborhood association, then he will bring him to the nearest local government clinic. At least, he will get the first aid from the doctor.

Maysaroh: You are brilliant friends. With those indications, we will do the first aid to the person who is infected with typhus disease and our surrounding neighborhood will free from any kinds of dangerous disease.

Sayid: I hope so. But how to keep our home from dangerous insects such cockroach, fly, and mice? They are the source of this disease. If we let them stay inside the house, it means that you let your family get sick.

Eni: I almost miss it. But logically, if we always clean the house until the small holes on every corner of the sides, it has prevented them to make those sides being their home. Do you agree?

Yeni: But it is not only that. You have to prepare anti-insects spray to kill them if we know that there are some insects or you can make a trap for catching mice. Enough.

Dian: No. it is not quite enough. The most important thing is you have to do all that continuously and check the empty holes from the mice. Don’t let your food is opened, because the fly will drop it eggs there.

Eva: Medicine is also important. If you don’t have opportunity to see the doctor, you can do your first aid by drinking some tablets for fever. It will decrease the hot body temperature and make him sleep.

Maysaroh: Nice idea. But don’t you think that it is better to prevent it happens then to cure it? Wiseman said that and it is true. It such a wise word “preparing the umbrella first before raining”.

Sayid: What the solutions are! I really believe that we can protect not only our surrounding environment clean, but also our healthy body. We should promise to do that.

Eni: Ok, glad! We promise. Oh, I nearly forgot. We will have mutual cooperation at Sudirman Street near Taman Kota tomorrow. Our mayor has ordered us to clean the sidewalk along Sudirman Street.

Yeni: Let’s bring our broom lidi, and clean our beloved city, so that metro will be the healthiest city in Indonesia. I am very proud if it really happens and it will be famous.

Dian: Ah, don’t say so. Even we don’t clean it yet, you have imagined at anywhere. I will ask all my family to get involved in this program and explain to them that cleanliness is the priority.

Eva: So do I. I will ask not only my family but also my neighbor to clean the environment together. The cleanest the city is, the happier the citizen will be.

Maysaroh: Work hard friends! May Allah bless our wishes and make it real. It is four p.m. now and we should pray Ashar. Let’s end our discussion end see you tomorrow.

All: see you!

M.Sayid Wijaya Berprestasi lewat Casciscus

Sama seperti mahasiswa kebanyakan. Namun, dont judge the book by the cover.

(LAMPUNG POST, Kamis, 27 September 2007)

PROTEST IN A DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY

A country, which applied free vote for people, has many works to resolve. People usually ask many things to government to be fulfilled. Sometime, they ask in the contrary of its plans. Ignoring is impossible because they pressure by anarchy.

Democracy means (country with a) system of government in which all the people of a country can vote to elect their representatives.[1] Our beloved country, Indonesia, applies this political doctrine. The doctrine has been starting adopted since 1945 when Indonesia declared its independent day. Democracy of Parliamentary, Leadership, Pancasila (The Five Basic Principles of the RI), and Reformation, were its names used in Indonesia. Each name shows how a leader headed the country.

In 1960 – 1965, Democracy of Leadership named to the period, which a leader convinced about his done received, and refused voting. Democracy system did not run. The leader still dominated the power in the country.

Democratic society

Democracy is identical with a group of people which given an opportunity to take a part in a constitutional procedures that determine how a government functions. The group represents another people votes, opinions and complaints asking for changing needed. Sometime, some policies do not conform to social can influence each people perception of the policies decided. People react and try to replace or make up for new policy, which is suitable for their wish.

Democracy needs some pillars. Here are:[2]

  • Sovereignty of the people.
  • Government based upon consent of the governed.
  • Majority rule.
  • Minority rights.
  • Guarantee of basic human rights.
  • Free and fair elections.
  • Equality before the law.
  • Due process of law.
  • Constitutional limits on government.
  • Social, economic, and political pluralism.
  • Values of tolerance, pragmatism, cooperation, and compromise.

At the first pillar, sovereignty of people is a main basic pillar of a democratic society. The society dominate whole power in government because each peon, whose position as representative in government, elected by people.

Political parties have a big role in supporting democracy. They concern to reborn not only a peon who capable and representative but also totally expected to improve democratic and political system. For instance, a self – government (autonomy) has been developed in many regions of Indonesia now a day. The regions focus on what to do is profit for resident. They dig natural resources and process it in order to be an earning. They do not depend upon government no more for their existence, legitimacy or authority.

Basic human right

In a democracy society, government guarantees human right. In a world where freedom is practiced, basic human rights always become main priority. The government should protect rights, such equal treatment, freedom of speech and many others. In such international agreements, basic human rights are categorized:[3]

  • Freedom of speech, expression and the press.
  • Freedom of assembly and association.
  • Freedom of religion.
  • Right to equal protection of the law.
  • Right to due process and fair trial.

It means that government completely transforms human aspirations into right where freedom of speech, expression and the press are not prevented but limited into rules. Freedom of religion opened widely that every people can perform his or her belief. Freedom and association is in where people may join and meet legally. They also have a right to equal in law and trial where position, status is not in effect. All people are on a straight line.

Protest

Citizens have right to protest some policies of the government by demonstration, strikes or other form of direct actions. They act to participate in government of the country. It means that they really take a part in deciding new policy. If citizen regard the policy is not fit, they will express refusal or disagreement of it by demonstration non-violent or anarchy.

Such protests have always been part of democratic society. For instance, hundreds of people displaced by the mudflow disaster in sidoarjo, east java demanded government and PT Lapindo Brantas compensate them for their destroyed land and houses. They protest Lapindo to pay cash compensation. [4] In political case such in Timor Leste, thousands of angry supporters of Timor Leste rabel leader Alfredo Reinado burnt tyres and threw stones in the capital on Monday to protest against a raid by international troops on the fugitive’s hideout.[5]

Those events showed us how effective protest is against unwanted policy violently or non-violently. However, sometimes it does not change the condition and government going on their decision to lunch new policy.

Protest in a Democratic Society is a Right and Must

Someone has right to express what he complains about and feels that thing doesn’t fit. In democratic society, the expression to do so is always identical with protest. They demand from government that they don’t fit with policy lunched. If people don’t use their right to change any policy needed, it means that they let government run the country authoritarian. As the effect, people will suffer.

Sometime, when people choose a leader, they don’t think any bad factor of him. A leader usually promises many things in order people choose him. He doesn’t care that there is an area living by the poor. Increasing any food or kerosene price has a big effect for them. Though when the leader speeches, before being a president, he promised to increase prosperous for the poor. In fact, no changes can change the life.

Students always do protest. They can raze a leader from his power. But it is not only that, they also have a big role for changing of the country, as we know that students have a job as agent of change. It means that only they can change a condition to be better then before. Some movements of student of university build a power preparing to control any unfair policy. They are ready to scarify their life only for changing to the better condition and life.

Protest is a right and must to build a strong country not only in economic aspect, but also in education and social politic. We have to give an achievement to appreciate their struggle for defending this country from our own hidden enemies.
